History

Kobolds are one of the many races created by the Divine Being Thor after the Birth of Magic. They were created during Thor's rumored drunken stupor, along with many nature-esque creatures in the realms. It is speculated that Groundbolds were made at the same time as Kobolds, however the Groundbolds remained primitive, lacking the ability to speak common tongue or any apparent magical abilities.

Previously, Kobolds were primarily a tribal race and lacked established culture of society. This has changed in recent history.

Description

Kobolds are a small mammalian race with sharp claws that are often found residing in caves and rocky habitats. Most Kobolds dislike getting wet, likely due to their preference of a dry, dark habitat. They have an outer layer of rock and mud that gives them the appearance of fur. This appearance allows them to blend into surrounding mountains and rocky terrain. The Kobold genealogy is affected by the geological location in which they are born, causing Kobolds in desserts to become Sandbolds and ones in snowy areas to become Snowbolds.

Kobolds have natural night vision, but this is not inherent to all members of the species. Members such as Philhipé, Kinney Boots, and Jo Krysstal do not have this ability. Philhipé had to overcome this by using an eye patch to keep an eye dilated.

Kobolds' diet revolves around digesting various minerals and rocks, preferably of zero monetary value. They can eat gem-like creatures, such as Gemlings as well. Kobolds can digest other food, such as fish, but greatly seek something to their tastes. Kobolds at sea have been known to resort to eating cannonballs. Their fondness for eating gems often puts them on opposing sides with treasure hunting Dwarves.

It is implied by Yohan in The Sandbolds that Kobold genitalia is the reverse of what one would expect based on masculine or feminine norms.

Appearance

Kobolds generally considered to be slightly shorter than dwarves with bestial features. They have long ears, small eyes that are mostly black in color with a slight highlight that varies from Kobold to Kobold, and have a furry appearance that actually camouflages their fur's true nature of being rocky materials. These rocky materials vary in colors from various red hues to even charcoal grey. As a Kobold ages, their rock fur begins to lose its pigment and begin to appear grey, as seen with Bromas. It is unknown what designates the hue of the fur nor how the pigment can fade.

Beyond their unique exoskeleton fur, Kobolds share many biological similarities to Elves, Dwarves and Gnomes. Female Kobolds have mammary glands similar to that of females of other races.

Kobold Culture

Kobolds are often regarded as unintelligent beasts by other races, notably by Elves and Porcs. This segregation causes them to seek employment as bandits, thieves, and pirates or seek isolation from other races all together. Kobolds are often in groups with their own race, with the largest group being the Monks who reside in the Kobold Mountains, but small groups of Kobolds are not uncommon to come across. Within Kobold groups, their hierarchy allows leaders to be near undefinable, forcing their subordinates to do as instructed.

Kobolds are known to be great Paladins and Monks, due to their naturally religious nature. However, Paladin Kobolds are typically regarded as health units where as Monk Kobolds are regarded as powerful figures.

Kobolds can train to wield three weapons at once, due to their powerful jaws. The first notable Kobold to do this was Chimera, who was regarded as a highly dangerous criminal.

Kobold Language

Kobolds are commonly known to repeat the word "Kobold" when speaking to one another and when communicating with other races. However other races do not seem to understand this language and some will try to answer them by repeating their name or race. Although there are claims that the language is made up to mimic the languages of other races, there appears to be some depth to the language, as well as some indication that it is commonly spoken.

In Kobold Headhunters, it was learnt that Kobolds use the word Karazeem to describe a number of things. It was the name of a Kobold Monk, the name of the town, an emotion and an act of revenge.

Birth of the Kobolds

Thor, after being trapped in stone by his Dwarven creations, asked for wild Kobolds to free him in exchange for three wishes. Once they did, the Primitive Kobolds said "Kobold" and Thor simply created more Kobolds. These Thor created Kobolds however were much more intelligent and thus the modern Kobold race was born. The Primitive Kobolds were so happy that they forgot about the other two wishes.

Abilities

Kobold Rabies

Kobold rabies are transmitted by being bit by anyone who has Kobold rabies. The rabies deal damage over time, and can cause frothing at the mouth.

Immunity to Rabies

While Kobolds can be carriers for rabies, they themselves are not affected by it, other than occasionally causing them to foam at the mouth. Kobold Rabies can be given to anyone bitten by a Kobold that has Kobold Rabies.

Eating

Kobolds are known for eating gems, meaning they have a powerful enough jaw strength and digestive system to handle gems and crystals. They also eat rocks, but they prefer the taste of gems.

Kobolds are able to eat and live off of cannonballs.

Kobolds are able to eat Gemlings as shown by No-Eye Bromas.

Sandbolds

Sandbolds are a different type of Kobold that can freeze time. They appear that they can interact with people around them when time is frozen. Three sandbolds appeared in The Skeleton King.

Sandbold Illusions

Sandbold Illusions are used to give messages to people. They appear to be a Kobold but when are interacted physically they turn into sand.

Trivia

  • Kobolds were created in the original Unforgotten Realms web show by Rob. He was pleased by a fan's interpretation of a Kobold and implemented them into the show.
    • Likewise, the Canon of Kobold's creation is the same as the original web show.
  • Kobolds having a high connection to the Paladin class might be due to the fact that they naturally have the ability to roll twice and manipulate their probability. This ability is very similar to the Paladin ability Divine Intervention.
  • Some Kobolds seen in the current campaigns seem to be habitual liars, or at least state false information for what they believe to be true. Examples include conflict of information on whether elves sleep, or the movement patterns of Elaphelks. [1]
