Pot Puppies are dog-like creatures that were first seen in The Jewel of the Dingo Isles campaign.

Pot puppy without the pot

Pot Puppies are puppies that grow from seeds. These very common seeds can be acquired from a wizard, and after tending to them, will eventually sprout a Pot Puppy. It is unknown if the puppies have to be grown in pots or can be grown outside pots too.

Skeletons seem to like Pot Puppies, and were seen attempting to protect them from the Crew of the Bocoe inside the temple of the Dingo Isles.

Pot Puppies are immune to fire, and convert into Hellhounds when coming into contact with fire. They can revert back into Pot Puppies if they expel their flames.

Abilities

• Bite – Pot Puppies can attack an adjacent target, dealing 3 damage. An adult can deal 5 damage with this attack.

Hell Hound Awakening

Discovered in The Sunswords, Pot Puppies that come into contact with fire will transform into 'Hell Hounds,' which are capable of breathing out fire. Hell Hounds are typically considered hostile, however, training it as a Pot Puppy will tame it as a Hell Hound. Extinguishing the fire of a Hell Hound will transform it back into a Pot Puppy.

History

No one is quite sure whether these creatures were invented by a magician or simply found in the wild. Exceedingly common, these creatures sell for a dime a dozen. All you have to do plant them in soil, and keep them well watered. Once fully grown, it exits the earth and becomes loyal to whoever planted them. The average lifespan of pot puppy is apparently one year, although it is unconfirmed if Phineas was telling the truth when he said this. At the end of its life, the puppy reverts to mulch and seeds. These seeds can be replanted and grown into another Pot Puppy.

The Jewel of the Dingo Isles

The Crew of the Bocoe saves three Pot Puppies inside the grill room in the temple of the Dingo Isles from a group of Skeletons.

The Sunswords

Kallark rescues a Pot Puppy from a burning house and adopts it, naming it Annihilus the Living Death That Walks. When Jakelad escapes and the party is attacked by Porcs, a stray Fireball from Dave ends up hitting Annihilus, turning him into a Hell Hound. Kallark and Gwyneth then attempt to subdue it, but Annihilus actually manages to turn back into a Pot Puppy on his own, by expelling all of the flames inside him in an attack.

The Zarlin Catacombs

Steven the Pot Puppy is found by Bromas in the treasure room of the Zarlin Catacombs. He loyally follows his master's orders, protecting Fantastico and attempting to fetch Prism when Bromas becomes a Kobold. However, Steven is killed whilst the party fights the Bennu War Machine, and is subsequently put into a Soul Puppet by Morgan Marie. Unfortunately, when Morgan falls off the ledge to his death, Steven is stuck at the bottom of the chasm, in a puppet, alongside Prism.

The New Crew

In the time that passed between the Crew of the Bocoe's voyage to the Dingo Isles, Merci's Pot Puppy, the weak and sickly one that was saved, had died, and, after Kinney Boots left the crew, she took her Pot Puppy with her. The last Pot Puppy, belonging to McCoy, was named Cooper, and proved himself to be a valuable member of the crew. While storming Laeyuleaugh, McCoy takes Cooper ashore, and fights alongside his companion, with Cooper managing to kill several Elves and Gnomes, but losing a leg in the fight. After they retrieve the key, and Merci is captured, McCoy, acting as captain, assigns Cooper as his first mate. When the crew encounters Virgo Sunsword, Cooper again proves his worth, by steering the ship for the entire duration of the battle, and using it to attack the enemy ship. He was last seen being escorted to the Silvermine Mountains alongside McCoy and the rest of the crew.

Trivia

• It is questionable whether or not the party, other than Octivias, knew that they were plants.
• Pot Puppies were introduced in The Jewel of the Dingo Isles, which was the campaign that, according to Rob, had "no tricks". However, Pot Puppies are not only immune to fire, but become hostile upon contact with it. Because Rob did not mention that to the players, the idea of "no tricks" became very questionable.
  • Rob continued this joke in The Sunswords, by having a Supporter Event called 'No Tricks.' When activated, it would 'spawn' three Pot Puppies inside the burning barn, which, when the players reached them, would turn out to be a toy emulating the sound of Pot Puppies.
