Harpies are avian creatures that have a largely feminine appearance. They are attracted to heavy fish smelling locations, as they live near The Drink and attack sailors.

History

A large flock of Harpies attacked the crew of the Bocoe initiating the first combat by attacking in waves of 10 for the first 4 rounds of combat. Their reason for attacking was to steal the crew's supply of Fish Yogurt.

Characteristics

Harpies are very common in the Drink, often attacking sailors for food. They are also known to attempt to steal items, mainly food.

Companions

File:Harpy Companion.png

As a companion Harpies have 25 stamina, are beast companions, and have access to the Peck, Flap, and Throw Companion Abilities. The Harpy Companion's main feature is their ability to spawn minions on any critical success your allies roll making them a lot more valuable. The companion also has a focus on moving targets around the battlefield and even being able to move an ally or oneself an additional 5 spaces as an anytime. They also have 2 ways of granting Immediate Bonus Actions to itself and allies.

Abilities

Peck

Peck is a melee anytime ability that deals 5 damage to a target. Rolling a Critical Success grants the Harpy Companion an Immediate Bonus Action.

  • The wild Harpy variant of this ability does 3 damage and has no extra bonus effect. Note that wild Harpies have not been used since companions have been introduced, so this may have changed to be the same as the companion ability.

Flap

Flap is a melee anytime ability that pushes a target back 5 spaces. If they hit a wall or another target they will take 5 damage.

  • In The Jewels of the Dingo Isles one Harpy presumably used this ability, at least an old variant of it before the companions were introduced, to blow away McCoy's grandpa's ashes.

Throw

Throw is a melee anytime ability that throws a target up to 5 spaces at an empty space. Throwing them to an empty space adjacent to an ally grants that ally an Immediate Bonus Action which must be used against the target.

Steal

Wild Harpies that are not tamed companions have been observed to steal items off of targets.

Notable Examples

Trivia

  • Even though a Harpy has wings and can fly it has not been stated anywhere that they are immune to difficult terrain or certain abilities like Lumberjack's Earthquake.
  • Despite their facial features resembling most other races a Harpy has never been seen to talk, nor is it stated they can talk on their companion card thus making it likely that they simply do not know common tongue or do not have the capacity to learn it.
  • It is unknown if they are even capable of using the items they like to steal or even why they like to steal them. It is however known that they can wear armor as one had stolen a Freeboot Coat from Kinney Boots and put it on while another stole a bandanna from Jo Krysstal.
  • Since Harpies are beast companions it's possible for them to be drawn by Luberjack's starting companion and as a Wolverine's transformation.
  • Harpies will likely have an easier time dodging attacks with lower rolls than other races due to the wording on the companion card saying they are "swift and nimble," but this is still up to the Game Master's interpretation.
