Gemlings are small crystal beings that are very fragile, and were first seen in the Roamin's Band of Thieves campaign.

Characteristics

Gemlings are weak crystalline creatures that hover just above the ground, and reside in caves. They are normally passive in nature, simply floating in caves when undisturbed. They can be hostile under certain circumstances, such as the appearance of a Gemlord, or in the presence of Kobolds. Their size can vary, with most being about 1-2 feet tall, although there are examples of some that are much smaller (Prism), and some that are much larger (Gemlord).

Gemlings are usually not sentient, being able to be forced into Crystal Catalysts in sets of ten and aligning themselves with whoever activated them. However, Gemlords override this, forcing the Gemlings to side with the Gemlord. There are some instances where Gemlings are independent, most notably Prism.

They are known to be very tasty to Kobolds, leading to Kobolds being the main predator for Gemlings. Given that they live in similar locations, this leads to several confrontations between the two species.

History

The first appearance of Gemlings was in the Glistening Caverns, near a band of Kobolds. The thieves confronted the Kobolds and were aided in battle by some natural Gemlings. After the battle was concluded with the thieves as the victors, the party inspected the cave to see a large floating crystal.

This crystal was tickled by the Dwarf K-4, causing it to reveal itself as a Gemlord. This would result in another battle, with the victor being the thieves once again, shattering the Gemlord.

After the Unnamed Elemech was defeated, it decided to use Prism, a sentient Gemling, as a distraction so that it could run away. Morgana Marie befriended Prism, and he in turn helped her and the party by opening a door to explore deeper into the catacombs.

Later on, Bromas used his Crystal Catalyst to summon a massive army of Gemlings to help defeat the large Robots. Since he had been transformed into a Kobold, he then felt the urge to eat some of them, but felt especially drawn to Prism, and, after sending his Pot Puppy to go through a small hole to fetch the Gemling, becoming possessed by a cursed treasure, and trying to order his army of Gorgons and Gemlings to then fetch him, Fantastico used his Hurricane Bracer, instantly wiping out all but 2 of the Gorgons, and all but 3 of the Gemlings.

These Gemlings continued with Bromas through to the fight against the Bennu War Machine, and survived, although were presumably left behind inside the catacombs, or eaten. Prism also survived, but, as Morgana died, he was left at the bottom of a deep crevasse, alongside Steven the Pot Puppy, whose soul had been trapped in a Soul Puppet.

As the party fought against the Gnome bandits, two Gemlings huddled around what appeared to be a sleeping Gemlord, although they did not become hostile.

Gemlords are much larger variants of the generic Gemlings, appearing roughly about four times the size of a Dwarf. Unlike their smaller counterparts, Gemlords are immediately hostile, attacking whoever and whatever is near them. If they are enraged even more, they can generate large fleshy arms to combat with.

They are shown to have a hibernation state of a unknown length of time and the ability to self reproduce, creating several Gemlings at a time.

Powers and Abilities

  • Diamond Beam: A beam that gets projected out of the Gemlord, it shoots in a direct line through targets.
  • Bench Presser: Gemlords have the ability to instantaneously grown two, large muscular arms.
