Plot
Yumi's band of thieves are tasked by Nisovin to steal an orange glowing Sun Key from the Spellblade Elves. Comprised of only three members: Yumi herself, Squinks the Keen Gnome Bard, and Gracias the Okagnoma Gnome Sorcerer, Yumi hires a dwarf Warrior as the party meat shield. The newly hired dwarf, named Bumbley, is soon renamed by the group to "Dwarf Number Three," a name he accepts eagerly.
Nisovin drops off the party at the corner of the known map. Knowing the party must go "northeast-ish", Nisovin warns the party from traveling into the Glistening Caverns directly north. Distrusting the lazy sorcerer, the party heads north to encounter a group of Kobolds. Upon arrival, Yumi encounters Pete (later renamed Philhipé), and impresses him with his manners. In doing so, Pete tries to allow free passage through the cave for the party, but the Kobold Boss disagrees with the idea. Calling out Yumi and her party for containing a dwarf, hostile tensions grow between the groups, but are almost calmed by Dwarf #3's questionable characteristics. Tensions turned to battle, however, when Dwarf #3 revealed his name. During the battle, two Whirlwind Kobolds and 10 universally-aggressive Gemlings appear, in addition to the Kobolds showing signs of rabies.
The Gemlings, posing little threat, are quickly destroyed by the Kobolds. Gracias flanks the Kobold party, and pauses to give Pete a hug. In doing so, Pete becomes non-aggressive to the party, and both he and Gracias sit out the rest of the encounter. Dwarf #3 is then infected with rabies by a Whirlwind Brother, while under the charm of Squinks. After the aggressive Kobolds are rendered dead or unconscious, Pete is introduced to the party. He is formally accepted and renamed Philhipé by Yumi, while Dwarf #3 is renamed "Kobold Number Four" to prevent further naming conflicts.
Philhipé guides the group deeper into the cave, to a large cavern full of Gemlings and a very large gem in its center. Philhipé goes to lick the large gem, which his boss had told him to never do, but nothing happens. Then as Kobold #4 tickles the gem, it awakens and is revealed to be the Gemlord, which turns all nearby Gemlings aggressive. In the course of battle, the Gemlord grows arms and spawns more Gemlings upon being hit, as well as Amplifying Crystals that reflect its giant laser beam. The team tries various techniques, including trying to charm the Gemlord and enlarging Kobold #4 to battle it. Despite the spawning of many Gemlings, the Gemlord is eventually defeated and shatters into pieces, causing remaining Gemlings to turn passive.
